Custom model motorcycles

Your motorcycle, built to scale from your photographs

Send us pictures of your bike and we hand-build a 1:24 replica of it — the spoked wheels, the chain, the crash bars, the panniers and your own number plate. Carved by hand from Philippine mahogany, with resin-printed fine parts, painted to match.

What is different about a bike

A motorcycle is mostly machine, and all of it shows

A car hides its engineering under a body. A motorcycle wears it. There is no bodywork to hide behind — the frame, the forks, the chain, the linkages and the exhaust run are on show from every angle, and each one is built and finished on its own.

Photographing your bike

We need both sides of a motorcycle, and here is why

A car is very nearly symmetrical, so one good side tells us most of it. A motorcycle is not: the chain and sprocket live on one side, the exhaust on the other, the side stand on one. Photograph a bike from one side only and half the machine has to be guessed at. Both sides, the front and the rear is the difference between a replica and an approximation — and a close-up of anything you have changed puts that on the model too.

Scale

1:24 is the scale for a motorcycle

We build cars at 1:43, 1:24 and 1:18. A bike is about as long as a car but a fraction of its bulk, so at our smallest scale it comes out around four centimetres and the detail that makes it worth having — the spokes, the chain, the levers — drops below what the eye can pick out. At 1:24 a motorcycle is 8–10 cm nose to tail and holds all of it.

Questions

Custom model motorcycles, answered

Do you build custom model motorcycles as well as cars?

Yes. A motorcycle is built the same way a car is - from your own photographs, sketched and carved by hand from wood - but it is a different job. A car hides its engineering under a body; a bike wears all of it on the outside, so the frame, the chain, the linkages and the exhaust run are each built and painted separately.

What photographs do you need of a motorcycle?

Four at minimum: both sides, the front and the rear. A motorcycle is not symmetrical - the chain and sprocket sit on one side and the exhaust on the other - so a bike photographed from one side only leaves half the machine to be guessed at. Add a close-up of anything you have changed and it goes on the model.

What scale do you build motorcycles at?

1:24, which comes out at 8 to 10 cm nose to tail. A motorcycle is about as long as a car but a fraction of its bulk, so at our smallest scale a bike is roughly four centimetres and the detail worth having - the spokes, the chain, the levers - falls below what the eye can pick out. 1:24 holds all of it.

Will it have my number plate on it?

Yes. Your plate is cloned from your photograph, the same as the paint and the wheels.

Can you build my modifications?

That is most of the point. Aftermarket exhaust, crash bars, panniers, a top box, a different screen, engine bars, a re-spray - if it is in your photographs it goes on the model. Tell us about anything that is hard to see and we will build that too.

Do you build scooters, dirt bikes and trikes?

Yes - anything on two or three wheels. If you are not sure whether we can build yours, send the photographs and we will tell you before you order.
